Barbara Coughlin Passed Away on December 26, 2025

By the family

Jan. 8, 2024: Barbara (Barrett) Coughlin of Bronxville, NY and Woodstock, VT was called home by the Lord on December 26th, 2024.  Beloved wife of Gerald Wallace Coughlin (d. 2012). Devoted mother of Sarah Vorbach (Charles) of Bronxville, and Gerald Coughlin, Jr. (Shelley) of Darien, CT.  Barbara was loved by her six grandchildren: Charles, Lois, Peter and Mary Rose Vorbach, and Ryan and Quinn Coughlin.

Barbara was born in New Rochelle, NY on January 16, 1931 to Lois and Edmund Barrett.  The youngest of five children, she was pre-deceased by her siblings: William Barrett, Mary Hendrickson, Lois Brady and Edmund Barrett, Jr.  Barbara graduated from Convent of the Sacred Heart (Greenwich) ’49,  and the New England Conservatory of Music, ’53.  She was an accomplished pianist, an avocation that brought Barbara great joy throughout her life. Her music was not just a gift but a reflection of her inner beauty and kindness.

Following graduation from the Conservatory, Barbara began a 16-years long career at Life magazine in the photography editor’s office.  She was responsible for assembling keepsake photo albums for dignitaries who appeared in the magazine.  Barbara forged close friendships with many of the Life magazine photographers, as well as her wonderful colleagues, many who remained dearest friends long after Barbara retired from the magazine.

Set up on a blind date by a mutual friend, Barbara married her beloved husband, Gerry, in 1964.  Together they joyfully raised their children in Bronxville, NY. Barbara was a steadfast volunteer in the community. A Cub Scout den mother, Girl Scout leader, PTA Board member, Junior League Board member, Working Gardener, CCD, DAR Regent, she was tireless in her efforts to give back to the village she loved.  Barbara’s most treasured volunteer role however, was awarding the DAR Good Citizenship Medals for more than 25 years to students at Bronxville, Eastchester and Tuckahoe High Schools.

Barbara’s faith was the cornerstone of her existence. Her unwavering belief in God guided her through life’s challenges and triumphs. She lived her faith daily, not just in words but in actions. Whether it was volunteering or offering a helping hand to those in need, Barbara embodied the teachings of Christ with grace and humility.  Barbara was extremely grateful for her wonderful parishes; St. Joseph’s in Bronxville and Our Lady of the Snows in Woodstock, VT.  She was a daily communicant for more than 60 years.

Barbara was a lifelong member of Westchester Country Club.  With her parents and siblings, and later with Gerry and her children, she spent countless hours enjoying the Club and the camaraderie of the wonderful membership.

Barbara’s kindness knew no bounds. She was the person who always had a smile for a stranger, a comforting word for a friend, and a loving embrace for her family. She had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel special and loved, and her gentle nature was a beacon of light in our lives.

A wake for Barbara will be held on Thursday, January 9th from 4-7pm at Fred H. McGrath & Sons Funeral Home, 20 Cedar Street in Bronxville.  The funeral mass will be held on Friday, January 10th at 10:45am at the Church of St. Joseph, 15 Cedar Street, Bronxville.
